Drawing Final Exam
The self portrait project was without a doubt the most challenging. I had trouble choosing an idea of what I could do, what picture I should use, etc. I chose to do myself putting on makeup, because it is something I do almost every day, and it was a creative and original idea. While completing this piece, I ran into many obstacles. I had a lot of trouble trying to find a good skin tone, considering there was no flesh toned chalk. I had to use a mixture of prismacolor, and purple, pink, yellow, and brown chalk. I found myself not going dark enough on the shadows, because I felt uncomfortable going from super dark to my pale skin. My success in blending all of these colors, as well as adding another medium, was innovative and creative. I also had trouble figuring out proportions and placement of the facial features on my sketch, but the outcome of it was great. In the end, I consider this drawing to be one of my best, because I gained the experience of fixing my mistakes, and drawing a solid portrait, which I had never done before. I was able to "fix" the bruised look on the face, have an accurate and even skin tone, well crafted features, and more. One thing I really like about this piece, is how its a "close up" and fills up the page. I have extremely minimal negative space (in the top left corner), and I think that makes my piece stand out.
Andy's self portrait showed exemplary knowledge on not only the prismacolor medium, but technique, creativity, and originality. He chose to do a mechanical style portrait, and I thought that was pretty outside the box, because the creativity involved might turn some people away. However, Andy did an impeccable job at showing the texture and color of the metal, which is pretty difficult. His use of the "unseen" colors in the metal, skin tone, and hair, was great. Everything about this piece was amazing, relating to overall craftsmanship, originality, and the project outline itself. The portrait actually looks like him, and it is recognizable that it is mechanical and of Andy. Another thing that stands out to me, was the features. The nose and eyes looks fantastic, as well as the hair.
The candy mini lesson was especially helpful when it came to not only the opacity project, but any observational drawing. This lesson helped me practice prismacolor techniques, such as blending and color choice according to what I see, or even what I don't see. Getting practice with a dramatic highlight, texture, observation, shadows, and much more was great. I feel that the instruction for the candy and lollipops ensured success on many levels.

I felt that drawing facial features before doing my self portrait was very helpful. However, I wish I had more time to practice them from different angles, and with different media. I understand that we were on somewhat of a limited time schedule since we had to fit 2 projects in, but if I could go back that is what I'd do. Despite this, I really liked the magazine idea. It was fun, and not as boring as looking in a mirror and drawing what I see. I thought the individual studies of the features was helpful. I would have liked more practice and instruction with drawing hair and lips, since that is what I struggled with mostly.
